How to Choose Singles from an Album, EP, or Mixtape
In this video, independent dance pop singer/songwriter JONATHAN MILLER discusses how to choose singles from an album, EP, or Mixtape. When going to choose singles from an album major music labels tend to look at 2 things: The market/ trends as well as a given artist's individual fanbase. They analyze their likes and dislikes and typically pick the songs they feel will perform the best.
Another thing that is especially important when choosing singles from an album is taking into account the artist's choice as well. One of the best gifts about being an independent artist is that we have creative freedom and our fans love that. So if you're wondering how to choose singles from an EP or how to choose singles from a mixtape -you've got some wiggle room. I've even seen artists go BACK in their discography and release a new single from a previous album while promoting their most current one! haha
Also one last thing about choosing singles - a lot of people always ask, "How many singles should I release from an album?" The answer is pretty simple: Albums get 1-3 Singles; EP's get 1-2 Singles, and Mixtapes can vary but I typically see them promoted like albums so I would say 1-3 singles is probably good. If you're album does incredibly well though and people keep buying it all the time you can always do more!
